Joani Reid Voluntarily Suspends Party Role as Husband Faces Chinese Spy Allegations
A businessman and former Labour Party adviser, Taylor has been arrested on suspicion of Spying for China and after that his wife and Labour MP Joani Reid has taken voluntary suspension from the party. Although the MP is not under investigation by the police, she has suspended herself to "avoid being a distraction" while the Labour Party conducts their internal investigation into the matter. The MP’s husband was arrested together with another former political adviser in Wales on suspicion of helping a foreign intelligence service, and they were both released on bail pending May.
The matter has come under scrutiny after it emerged that the MP’s consultancy firm received over £23,000 in interest-free loans from her husband’s businesses. The MP, who is the granddaughter of famous trade unionist Jimmy Reid, stated that she has never visited China or spoken about Chinese issues in Parliament. The Labour Party termed the accusations against the MP’s husband "incredibly serious" and stated that the MP is cooperating fully with their investigation.
